Goal:

The Lab focusses on two domain areas i.e. Develop Intelligent solutions for 1) Mineral Resource Modelling and 2) Health Sciences:

 

Scientific Objectives:

  • Development of Intelligent AI based Mineral Resource Estimation and Mine Planning Models
  • Artificial Intelligence based carcinoma and heart sound analysis and abnormality detection device

 

Description of Lab:

The Intelligent Information Processing Lab aims to provide cutting edge research, development and training framework for both young and experienced researchers by applying signal processing, machine learning and pattern recognition theory and methods to real-world multidisciplinary problems faced by Pakistan within the areas of mineral resource estimation and healthcare.  The lab’s focus will mainly be in the following two main domain areas:

  1. AI in Mineral Resource Estimation and Mine Planning
  2. AI in Healthcare
  3. AI in Mineral Resource Estimation and Mine Planning

Principal Investigator: Dr. Khan Muhammad

  1. Mineral resource estimation is a broader term for quantifying the shape size and tonnage of an ore body. It unifies the mineral exploration program of a deposit to the mine planning and design phase before practically carrying out mining operations. Conventional processes of data collection are beyond the reach of investors in Pakistan’s mining industry due to expensive sample collection drive, technology, and non-availability of trained human resources. With the availability of data from multiple sources (remote sensing satellite imagery, subsurface geophysical data, surface/subsurface geochemical samples) huge interest is being generated in the scientific community to develop AI based mineral resource estimation. Research interest are emerging in data scientists to correlate remote sensing and geophysical signals with quantitative quality measures of a mineral (e.g. lithology type, metal content, Ash% in coal, Cu%, Gold ppm) using advanced AI based data-mining algorithms. This is of particular interest for Pakistani mining industry since it will reduce cost and devise efficient and quicker means of mineral resource estimation.  The lab will provide a National platform as common resource for researchers interested in development of new AI based algorithms for mineral resource modeling and estimation. Two active projects are:
    1. Development of Intelligent Mineral Resource Estimation Models: Application and Development of AI algorithms integrating multiple sources of data.
    2. Development of Mine Planning and Optimization Tools using Artificial Intelligence Based Techniques

 

 

  1. AI in Healthcare

Principal Investigator: Dr. Muhammad Salman Khan

With the exponential increase in digital capacity and the prevalence of biomedical sensors we have big health-related data at our disposal. AI is to play a key role in making sense of this data. Within healthcare AI can be a game-changer. There are multiple healthcare related problems where AI, specifically deep learning, algorithms could be utilized. According to a recent study, deals in AI startups in healthcare have been on the top in contrast to deals to all other areas in the last two years. AI could revolutionize • Imaging and diagnostics • Drug discovery • Personalized patient care • Lifestyle management and monitoring • Intelligent decision support systems.  Furthermore, it will also provide opportunities for young and experienced researchers and health sector (together with leading national medical universities) to nurture the application of AI in healthcare. Within the context of this lab research and development activities will be started by working on two projects initially and later exploring other relevant areas. The two active projects are:

  1. Artificial intelligence based unimodal/multimodal biomedical image analysis and carcinoma detection device; and
  2. Artificial intelligence based heart sound analysis and abnormality detection device.
